MEET THE OWNERS

_MG_5757.jpg

From as young as can I remember, every summer was on the sandy beaches of Cardigan Bay.  Early years spent with my family were on Llety, a nearby campsite. From a cosy squeeze in a four-man tent, we eventually were lucky enough to have a static caravan which felt like pure luxury. As an adult I remained totally in love with holidays on the west Wales coast. Aberporth always had a special place in my heart.

Years later a chance encounter was to lead to me buying my dream home on the coast in our beloved Aberporth. Edge House was once the restaurant that we were occasionally lucky enough to stop and have an ice cream at after a long hot day on the beach. Being one of four children and mostly covered in sand and sun cream, were ate our ice cream outside, but this was no hardship surrounded the breathtaking view of the sea. It is often this time of day you are lucky enough to spot a passing dolphin or two.

In 2012 I embarked on a project to renovate the original building. A simple Google search found me drawn to local Swansea architects Kay and Kristian Hyde. Although it was early days for Hyde + Hyde, it was clear to see they were an incredibly talented duo, and their homes were contemporary and unique. My dad and I met with Kristian on a rough winter's day in Aberporth. His enthusiasm was infectious, and it was that day we decided to take a massive leap of faith and demolish the building that was tired and in need of major works and embark on a brave new build.

Edge House has been a labour of love for myself, my dad and my partner for the last 10 years. We are now incredibly excited to share our family home with you, a place our children call ‘home by the beach’.

When writing this I have tried to think of my favourite aspect of Edge House, but there are far too many to list. Every time of year is special in the house. Now as we launch this new venture in winter you can enjoy stormy days by the fire with waves crashing on the rugged cliffs behind you and only the odd dog walker on the deserted beach before you. In summer as the sun rises its golden rays illuminate the concrete interior casting a warm glow. Breakfast on the balcony or evening drinks are often accompanied by a passing dolphin. The beaches are busier so make the snug a prime spot to sit and watch the world go by.

We hope you enjoy your stay and create your own precious memories.

FROM THE ARCHITECT

Precariously positioned near the edge of a sheer granite cliff, on the edge of Wales. The low energy home amplifies the beauty of nature; it confronts and endures while conjuring emotions of exhilaration and vitality. Located above a private cove in a small seaside village in Cardiganshire, Edge House rises up in white concrete, enduring and solid as the cliff it rests upon. Upstairs living provides a platform for life to play out within a powerful cantilevered form that extends towards distant horizons. Externally, it sits wrapped in a black, rain-screen cloak that protects the home from Atlantic storms. Internally, a dark and authentic atmosphere focuses the lived experience on the raw, unbounded sea that stretches out to infinity.
